The collection of data that accurately reflect the services and conditions in a facility, whether a small rural health post or an urban hospital, requires skill and practice. Data collectors should remember that the survey findings are only as good as the data from which they are calculated, and that the quality of that data depends to a large extent on them.

This module provides basic instructions on the practices that should be used when interviewing respondents as well as tips for handling difficult situations that data collectors might encounter while conducting an interview.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module, you will:

  • describe the interviewing practices recommended for the HHFA;
  • describe tips to handle difficult situations with respondents;
  • list reasons behind respondents’ hesitance to answer questions about sensitive topics;
  • provide appropriate responses to address respondent’s hesitance to answer questions about sensitive topics.

Module Format

The learning content is presented onscreen and can also be downloaded in PDF format. When you have completed the module, try the knowledge check quiz.
