Dr. Brima Bobson Sesay, HND-CH, MBBS, MPH, FAIPHP, ALAMIME Alumnus

I am a distinguished public health physician, health systems leader, and medical educator with over fifteen years of progressive experience in clinical medicine, public health practice, health policy, emergency preparedness, and health systems strengthening in Sierra Leone. My career reflects a strong commitment to improving healthcare delivery, building resilient health systems, and mentoring the next generation of health professionals.

I earned my  Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Sierra Leone and later obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Njala University, equipping myself with a solid foundation in both clinical practice and population health.

Currently serves as the District Medical Officer (DMO) for Bonthe District under the Ministry of Health, where I do provide strategic leadership to the District Health Management Team (DHMT). Throughout my career, I have successfully coordinated major public health emergency responses, serving as Incident Manager for the COVID-19 and Mpox outbreaks while also playing a pivotal leadership role during the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone.

A passionate advocate for academic excellence, I serve as an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at Njala University, Bo Campus, and as a Part-time Lecturer at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone (then), where I contribute to the education and mentorship of medical and allied health students.

My expertise spans health policy development, health programme management, monitoring and evaluation, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (RMNCAH), infectious disease control, and health systems strengthening. I led and provided technical oversight for numerous nationally and internationally supported initiatives, including programmes funded by the World Bank, UNICEF, WHO, and other development partners, while contributing to the development and implementation of Sierra Leone’s National Health Strategic Action Plan.

I am a Fellow of the African Institute of Public Health Professionals (FAIPHP), a recognition of my outstanding contributions to public health leadership and professional excellence across the continent. I am also an Alumnus of the African Leadership and Management Training for Impact in Malaria Eradication (ALAMIME) programme at Makerere University School of Public Health in collaboration with the University of Sierra Leone, where I strengthened my  competencies in leadership, management, and malaria elimination strategies.

I am an advocate for lifelong learning and collaborative leadership, I participated in extensive international training programmes focusing on global health leadership, emergency management, and health systems resilience. I am fluent in English, enabling me to engage effectively with diverse communities and stakeholders.

Beyond my professional responsibilities, I enjoy reading, travelling, and mentoring young health professionals. I am a dedicated family man with a  vision to contribute to a stronger, equitable, and resilient healthcare system that improves the lives of communities across Sierra Leone and Africa.
